NFL Alumni Northern California Chapter
29th Annual Golf Tournament The NFL Alumni Northern California Chapter held their 29th Annual Charity Golf Classic on Monday 21, 2010, the historic Olympic Club in San Francisco. Over 45 alumni captains participated in the day that raised funds for the chapters Caring for Kids Program. The tournament honored two great players- Ted Hendricks from the Raiders and Roger Craig form the 49ers. Each former player was given a donation to support his favorite youth program. The tournament featured a full day of golf at the site of the 2012 U.S. Open. After play was finished, the participants enjoyed a cocktail reception, silent auction, and then dinner and a live auction. Chairman Gordy Soltau announced at the dinner that he would step down as Chairman after 29 years. Gordys absolute and total dedication to the NFL Alumni, and his leadership in the role as Chairman, have been the foundation for the success of this event over the past three decades. Super Bowl of Golf The Nor Cal Team, led by Chapter President Larry Schreiber, missed the cut for the playoffs, after an early round injury to one of their clutch players. Jim Barnett. The team rallied and finished just short of the four team playoff, A great time was had by all! Also attending the meetings was Chapter Vice-President Steve Bono, who celebrated his 22nd wedding anniversary with his wife Tina while ably representing the chapter during player and chapter meetings.
NFL Alumni Dances With the Stars The NFL Alumni Northern California Chapter joined forces with Starting Arts, a Santa Clara based non-profit program, to raise money for youth and arts programs throughout the Bay Area. The NFL Alumni group was led by President Larry Schreiber, Sherman White, Gordy Soltau, and Allan Kennedy. The collaboration between the two organizations was hopefully the first of many. A grand time was had by all.
NFL Alumni Charter Member R.C. Owens 49ers legend R.C. Owens was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in a moving ceremony on March, 22 2010. A longtime fan favorite, R.C. was presented by John McVay, former General Manager for the five time Super Bowl Champion San Francisco 49ers. McVay told the audience how Bill Walsh relied on R.C. for many important roles, including managing all aspects of the team's training camp. R.C. has always been a great resource to the Northern California Chapter of the NFL Alumni, and all its members were very happy for his induction into BASHOF.
New NFL Executive Director meets with Nor Cal Alumni New National NFL Alumni Executive Director George Martin made his first visit to the Northern California Chapter Headquarters on St. Patricks Day. The former New York Giant defensive lineman was well received during a 90 minute Q & A session. Martin explained that he is still in the process of meeting all the chapters and taking inventory of their needs. He assured the membership that the mission of Caring for Kids will stay intact, along with the strong desire to increase player advocacy. He also said that recruitment of younger retirees will become a major priority in during his administration.
The NFL Alumni was proud to support the Semper Fi Foundation which provided scholarships for children of the United States Marines.
